NAIL TRIMMING

Nail clipping for all breeds of dog

Unless your dog runs around on hard surfaces such as pavements that help keep toenails short, you need to get your dog's nails cut every 4-8 weeks so their quicks don't become too long. Most dogs detest having their feet handled, so clipping their nails may never be the favourite shared activity, but getting the dog used to it at an early stage can help.

Many dog owners find the task of trimming a dog's nails intimidating. The nail contains both a blood vessel - the quick, and a nerve that can lead to bleeding and pain if the nail is cut too short. Yet nail trims are very important for the comfort and health of your pet.

I can travel round to your house and clip your dogs nails for you there, where the dogs feel a lot more relaxed being in the comfort of their own home. I'm fully qualified and have plenty of experience in handling different breeds and personalities of dogs. I can also trim cat's claws if required.

The lifestyle of your pet can depend on the condition of their nails

When dogs spend a good deal of time outdoors, running on various hard surfaces, including concrete pavements their nails are gradually worn down, and they have less of a need for formal nail-grooming sessions. But increasingly dogs spend more time indoors when their owners are at work, and running mostly on soft surfaces such as lawns when they are outdoors, so increasing the need for nail trimming.

Long, unkempt nails not only look unattractive, but over time they can do serious damage to your dog. When nails are so long that they constantly touch the ground, they exert force back into the nail bed, creating pain for the dog and pressure on the toe joint. Later it can actually realign the joints of the foreleg and make the foot looked flattened and splayed.

This is especially important in older dogs, whose posture can be dramatically improved by cutting back neglected nails. Long nails can get torn or split, which is very uncomfortable and, depending on severity, may need to be treated by a vet. In the end, unattended nails create a vicious cycle: the extra-long nails cause pain in the paws, they avoid having them touched, leading to stressful nail-cutting sessions, which makes both human and dog avoid them, leading to less frequent nail cutting and more pain.

Mobile nail trimming in Dorking & surrounding villages

Most people don't realize that even if their dog's nails are a little bit long, that can significantly affect the rest of the body and ultimately their overall well-being and health. Dog’s nails should be trimmed approximately once a month. Cats also need their nails clipped.

If you can hear your dog's nails clicking on the floor, they are too long! Of course, the dog's nails may be too long to cut really short due to the quick having grown out along with the nail. The quick is the blood supply to the nail and if cut, can bleed and cause a little discomfort in some dogs.

I am a dog groomer who has experience in cutting nails! I can help begin the process of reducing the nail and receding the quick so the nail can be cut shorter and shorter until at the desired length. I also can show you how to maintain the nail trimming at home and/or use a Dremel to keep them short.

Is your dog in need of a nail clip? I offer home visits for nail clipping locally to Dorking, Surrey.

Mobile nail clipping for cats and rabbits

Clipping nails isn't an easy job on any animal but cats and rabbits can be even more tricky than dogs. Regular cat claw trimming is necessary to prevent the claws from curling in on themselves and growing into the foot pad, which can become quite painful for your pet. People and furnishings can both be injured by lengthy claws. To support your cat's natural drive to claw and to keep those nails short in between nail-clipping sessions, a scratching post can help.

A rabbit's nails should also be clipped fairly regularly. If you go too long without clipping (as with dogs and cats) the blood supply can grow out with the nail, making it harder for the nail to be cut to the right length because the nerve grows out into the nail. It’s also important not to trim nails too short as this can also cause bleeding and pain. Daily supervised exercise outside on a variety of surfaces can help rabbits nails to be kept at a suitable length in between trimmings.

Cutting your pets nails at home is always less stressful for them which is why I offer mobile nail clipping to pets in and around the Dorking area.

Highly recommend Amber for nail clipping! Loftus had a bad experience when we attempted it ourselves, so we are grateful for the way Amber was able to gain his trust and clip his nails quickly and without causing Loftus any stress. Thank you
